Riding the Storms
Don’t know about you, but this month has seen something seriously bonkers going on with the climate. Maybe it’s because we have a Blue Moon month, this month (i.e. two full moons appearing in the same calendar month), with the full moon showing up in the heavens on both the 1st and 31st May, respectively. Who knows?
Glorious sunshine, gale force winds, even hailstones! … not to mention the obligatory springtime rainfall, and all in the space of the same, measly four hours. Quite crazy, really, and only in England, eh!
Anyway, not one to usually waste time talking about the weather as the norm – something we have no control over, so what’s the point(?) …. I thought it might be useful to check in on how some of us have actually managed to learn how to dance during life’s dreaded downpours!
People who manage to stay strong through life’s storms usually think in powerful ways, keeping the following at the forefront of their minds:
- Remember, no storm lasts forever
- Adopt an attitude of gratitude
- Embrace the lessons of any and every situation
- Seek the positives in all the negatives
- Embrace your vulnerability
- Let go of what you can’t control
- Surround yourself with positivity, be it people, places or things
- Believe in your own resilience
Steering through life’s storms is unsurprisingly connected to the brain’s inherent ability to nurture resilience. This impressive attribute, also known as neuroplasticity, is our brain’s unique ability to adapt in the face of adversity (shown in our AQ scores, as opposed to our IQ or EQ), in terms of being able to bounce back.
Research suggests that resilience can be cultivated. The strength to make it through life’s hardest storms is by no means an innate trait. Rather, it’s an ability that can be nurtured over time.
Whether it’s by adopting an attitude of gratitude, believing in your own resilience or embracing vulnerability in its rawest form, the power to overcome the tough times relies heavily on how you process your experiences. After all, it’s YOUR LIFE we’re talking about, so it’s a bit of a no-brainer, isn’t it? No pun intended!
