World Mental Health Day

shutterstock_320290256Every year World Mental Health Day is recognised on 10th October.

It is an opportunity to “raise awareness of mental health issues around the world and mobilising efforts in support of mental health.”

The theme for this year’s World Mental Health Day is ‘psychological first aid’ and the support people can provide to those in distress.

Every day people experience personal crises, from losing a loved one, to going through a stressful situation at work, or experiencing a serious physical illness.

Also, people who suffer abuse and/or violence are likely to experience stress and are at risk of developing mental health problems.

The principle of ‘psychological first aid’ is that we all need to know how to provide the right support to people who have experienced the stress of traumatic events, and how to help them seek professional help if necessary.

This World Mental Health Day a new resource will be launched on how to manage and reduce stress.  A series of blogs and personal stories explore the impact of traumatic events on people’s mental health and the steps people can take to support themselves and others.

Here are a few tips on how to help yourself deal with stress:

  1. Talk about your feelings – keep in touch with family and friends and ask them for help and support.
  2. Eat well – there is a strong link between what you eat and how you feel. Keeping hydrated is also important.
  3. Keep active – exercise releases chemicals that make us feel good.
  4. Take a break – if you feel stressed go and do something you enjoy, even if it is for only a short time it will help to calm you down
  5. Be yourself – accept who you are and care for yourself.

Inspirational Winners can provide psychotherapy to anyone going through a difficult time, and help them cope with mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, and phobias.
