Anxiety is a term used to describe feelings of worry, dread and fear.

It’s common for most of us to feel fearful or nervous from time to time but for some, anxiety can be incredibly unpleasant and can have a significant impact on work, family life and relationships.

What causes anxiety?

It’s unclear why some suffer from anxiety while others don’t. However, anxiety can be caused by a broad range of factors, some of which include:

  • Stressful life experiences
  • Diet/lifestyle
  • Childhood trauma
  • Drug or alcohol abuse
  • Side effects from medication
  • Genetics inherited from parents
  • A chemical imbalance in your brain

Who suffers from anxiety?

Anxiety is very common in the UK and can affect anyone at any time. According to research by the University of Cambridge, women are twice as likely as men to be affected by anxiety.

What are the symptoms?

If you suffer from anxiety you may identify with some of these common symptoms, such as:

  • Nausea
  • Headaches
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Heart palpitations
  • Feeling dizzy/lightheaded
  • Pins and needles/tingling sensation
  • Shortness of breath
  • Physical tension
  • Self-consciousness
  • Sense of impending doom
  • Restlessness

These symptoms can lead to long term health effects such as depression and anxiety can sometimes end up damaging a person’s career or their relationships with loved ones.
