Amazing mind...

As Derren Brown’s biggest fan, I’d do as he suggests, and grow something amazing this June with the power of suggestion!

An excellent way to understand the workings of the mind is to look upon it as if it were a garden: you have to deliberately plant something in order to grow something beautiful like a tulip, a daffodil or a rose, but you never have to do a thing to produce a garden full of weeds!! They just appear, with no effort at all!! Left unattended, your mind is exactly that – a mass of a mess, that’s full of nothing but unwanted weeds!!

You may have only the one mind, but it has two quite distinct attributes and powers. Call it the conscious and subconscious mind; the objective and subjective mind; the rational and emotional mind; the waking and the sleeping mind; the voluntary and the involuntary mind or many other such names we could give it, and it is this dual nature of the mind that holds the key to all your power and potential!

Those seeds that you’re planting, moment by moment, day in and day out, are based upon your habitual ways of thinking – as you sow in your subconscious mind all those thoughts that are outside of your awareness, so you reap the rewards or difficulties in your body and environment as your reality.

One would think, having been given such a brilliant piece of kit that we really need to learn how to use it! The main point to realise is that once the subconscious mind accepts something, however ridiculous, small, simple, insignificant or impossible, massive or unattainable an idea, it begins to execute it. Your subconscious mind is the seat of all your emotions and is the heart of your creative mind. If you think good, good automatically follows; if you think bad, bad follows just as predictably; that’s the way the mind works, pure and simple – the subtle truth is that this law works for both good and bad alike – when applied in a negative way, we experience failure, frustration and unhappiness. When our habitual thinking is harmonious, we experience health, success and prosperity.

Why then, if it’s all so simple, do we invariably get it wrong? Peace of mind and a healthy body are inevitable when you begin to think and feel in the right way – there is no way disease and pain can exist in a body when the mind is thinking good thoughts – it just isn’t possible! You give the right command to your subconscious mind, in the correct way with the corresponding image and feeling, your subconscious mind will faithfully reproduce the idea impressed upon it. You always get a reaction or response from your subconscious mind according to the nature of the thought or idea you consistently hold in your conscious mind. Hence the power of vision and visualisation!

You must remember that these are not two minds, simply two spheres of activity within the one mind: your conscious mind is the reasoning mind and the part of you that chooses; e.g. you choose your books, your home, your job, your partner. You make all these decisions with your conscious mind. On the other hand, without any conscious choice on your part, your heart is kept functioning automatically and the process of digestion, circulation and breathing are all carried out by your subconscious mind through a system that is quite independent of your conscious control. Your subconscious accepts whatever you give it, it is incapable of reasoning and will not argue – it is like the soil that accepts any type of seed, good or bad, and will grow whatever you plant in it!

The power of suggestion is an amazing thing – if you consciously assume something as true, even though it may be false, your subconscious mind will accept it as the truth and proceed to bring about the results, simply because you consciously assumed it to be true – the old adage could not be more apt here: never assume – it makes an ASS out of U and ME!!

Whatever you believe, therefore, becomes true for you, and therein lies the truth behind all the terrorist brainwashing, cultural and religious beliefs, social norms and traditions, all of which have been swallowed whole and never questioned, and potentially all that lies at the root of misery and sorrow the world over!

It is true, of course, that different people will react differently to the same suggestion because of their subconscious conditioning or existing beliefs. Be careful what you think about, then, because as sure as eggs is eggs, you’ll get in life whatever it is you think about!! Do yourself a favour and start picturing nothing but good coming into your life and watch the bad stuff disappear. If you don’t believe in the magic of the subconscious mind now, then with some consistent practice (and after checking out DB’s latest show, ‘Miracle’) you soon will!
