Enlightenment

A trip to Thailand can certainly help you on your journey towards enlightenment, but not essential if your budget won’t stretch that far – see below for some tips:

  • Learning to focus: unfocused desires bring about unfocused results. Without clarifying what you really want, you will continue to attract unsuitable situations, people and outcomes, as sure as eggs is eggs! Take 30 minutes each morning to sit still and reconnect with your inner voice. If you don’t have 30 minutes, then take five. If you don’t have five, do it on your way in to work. Enjoying a spiritual life isn’t down to a one-off action, it’s a daily commitment.

  • Learning the 24 hour rule: if you find yourself dealing with a situation where you are going out of your mind trying to control the outcome, then take a step back. It’s likely your ego is the thing that’s out of control. Make a pact with yourself to do nothing for 24 hours, then go back and revisit the situation. Commit to doing this as the norm and save yourself from making a string of disastrous mistakes.
  • Learning to forgive: until we can make efforts to do this, it is impossible to approach life from a loving perspective. We may think that forgiveness is a word that applies only to huge acts of wrongdoing, but resentment of any kind can be the catalyst for all sorts of negative behaviour. Each time we replay an old scene in our minds, we keeps our wounds raw and alive, preventing them from being healed. By letting go of judgements, we find a way to stop hurting and it is only through relinquishing the need to judge that true forgiveness is able to find its way to end all bitterness. Remember, forgiveness has nothing to with condoning the wrong and does not even have to involve the other person – it is simply a way for you to be able to let go of all the pain. Surely, that’s got to be worth a go??
