Bubbling away in your cauldron is the unleashed power of your super brain!

brainWorking as a wellness coach, I have been absorbed with the mind-body connection for many years, but it is the mind-brain connection that has been really intriguing me more recently.

Our brains are responsible for creating our individual worlds – whatever we experience today – our morning coffee, a brilliant idea at work or whatever – these are all uniquely and specifically customised for us, and the one principle that underlies everything proven in recent research is that we are not our brains – we are, in fact, the users of our brains.

Most of us operate on autopilot, letting our brains lead us; we assume our brain is teaching us everything. The super brain, on the other hand, is something we create consciously (or unconsciously for most of us), in order to have more insight, intuition, creativity and choice. This awareness, when tapped into correctly, can help us with many aspects of life, such as controlling anxiety, improving our memory, performing at our peak or even dealing with personal crises.

The brain can do only what it thinks it can do. When you say, “my memory isn’t what it used to be”, you are actually training your brain to meet these diminished expectations. So, what if you do the opposite and attempt to teach your brain to be unlimited…….just as we saw Bradley Cooper do in the movie, “Limitless” back in 2011, or more recently this year with Scarlett Johansson as “Lucy”!?!

Cultivating your super brain doesn’t require a drug as these movies are endorsing, it rests on five fundamental practices, all of which are within closer reach than you think and certainly easier to locate than an imaginary pill: increased self-awareness, self-reflection, meditation, conscious choice-making and realising the perceptions of your world are shaped entirely by you and your brain. It also helps if you change your surroundings or environment regularly, minimise stressful conditions, find work that reinforces your strengths, do something every day that you haven’t done before and, last but not least, get enough sleep and exercise…simples!?!

An example of how the super brain works can be seen in how we control anxiety. Our feelings of anxiety are based on anticipating future pain. We anticipate pain because we remember past situations where we weren’t able to handle it. These thoughts stick – and within us, they keep repeating, which makes the fear response stick fast in the brain. The fear then becomes convincing and stirs the memory, so leading to feelings of low self-esteem. With the super brain, however, you start to stir your own little cauldron by questioning every fear you have and learning a set of new responses. I would encourage people to ask: why am I afraid of this? Is this true? What is this belief doing to me? Who would I be if I didn’t have this belief? What is the opposite of this experience?

You don’t have to find all the answers, but if you keep practising this kind of reflection, it will lead to discovering greater levels of self-confidence and strengthening your inner belief. You will make better choices, start to trust your gut feelings as your true, internal sat-nav emerges, have a more optimistic outlook, ultimately enhancing your self-esteem as it reaches soaring new levels.

The super brain is able to connect the mind and the brain in a totally new way. It is a person’s resolve, intention, patience, hope and diligence that makes the difference between either letting your brain run you and, therefore, have your life pan out entirely by accident, or for you to take charge of your brain, where ultimately, you decide what your life does for you with deliberate intent. It may only be subtle, the words we use, but it is only through habitual best practice that we see massively significant changes to our entire being as we unleash these magical powers from within.
