A leap of faith

Every leap year we add an extra day to the Gregorian calendar in order to synchronise it with the seasons. It takes the earth approximately 365.25 days to once orbit the sun, so if we didn’t add on this extra day, to the usual 365, we would keep losing a whole 24 hours every four years.

This means, eventually, February would end up being a summer month in the northern hemisphere and it would be winter for those down under! How about that for a novelty! Actually, now I come to think of it, how about we do away with the leap year, altogether? At least this way, both the UK and Oz would have an equal and fair chance of seeing a white Christmas?? …..ok, enough of my ramblings, I digress….

For those born in a leap year, it can seem strangely unfair that there isn’t the chance to properly celebrate a birthday annually, given the actual birth date only turns up once every four years. This leap year, however, the 29th February falls on a Saturday, so I’m pretty sure there will be many “leap yearers” making the most of their weekend!

For the rest of us (as well as enjoying our pancakes today, i.e. 25th), how about we do something special this weekend, too? Go somewhere we’ve never gone before, do something we’ve never done before, feel something we’ve never felt before!?!

Playing out our lives within the narrow confines of the familiar does nothing …..other than eventually suffocate us …..it’s only when we step out of our comfort zone, by experiencing something new that scares us a little bit, that we can fully learn and grow. We take the odd risk, every now and then, and we realise how much we are alive!

Give yourself permission to come out of hiding this Saturday – stretch your limits, conquer your fears and seize the day! The leap year day itself won’t be back for another four years, but the 29.02.20 will never be back at all! So, what are you waiting for? Don’t be bored, be brave, instead! Take that leap of faith and dive headfirst into it, everyone!

Geronimo!!!! or, as we say in Latin: Carpe Diem!!
