JFK’s Leadership
After Abraham Lincoln, I do believe that the greatest US President we have ever had the good fortune, honour and privilege to see in power was John Fitzgerald Kennedy. No matter what anyone may think of his private life, this man was the FORCE behind so much during his, so brutally cut-short, time in office.
As we mark the anniversary of this amazing human being’s passing on that fateful day in Dallas, Texas, on 22nd November, 1963, it is
also worth remembering JFK’s unique recipe as his leadership style.
Great leaders gain the buy-in, loyalty and support of people by sharing their vision, setting clear expectations, parameters and boundaries, being respectful, listening to their team’s ideas and supporting them in achieving their goals.
If you’re lucky enough to have had a boss like I have in the past (you know who you are, Chris Keeling), you’ll know that they also double up as coaches and mentors, helping their people to grow and improve their skills and abilities, honing them to perfection.
Instead of using power and authority, they gain the loyalty and commitment of their people by giving them autonomy and fostering a healthy culture of creativity and fun ….not to mention, teaching us the benefits of humility as the most powerful ingredient of them all.
By definition, leaders require a following, so just stop for a moment and ask yourself the question, “why should anyone be led by me?” Then, as you take the next step on that “long and winding road”, preparing to “let’s get ready to rumble”, see yourself executing a plan so awesome that your team cannot possibly fail to win!!
